Not a bad idea that

DPF bought my attention to a proposal to lower the inner city speed limit in Wellington to 30 kpm. Having seen a couple of people merged with the working end of buses during my time at the BNZ Centre, can't say that I disagree:
Central cityvspeed limit to be 30km/hr in parts of Wellington

The speed limit in parts of central Wellington will be cut by 20km an hour from Tuesday.

Wellington City Council has lowered the speed limit to 30km an hour after a student was killed in a bus-only lane on Willis Street. The change was recommended by Wellington Coroner Garry Evans.

Lambton Quay shopping area in central Wellington is one of the main routes affected.

Deputy Mayor, Alick Shaw, says there 104 crashes have been reported in the past five years in the Lambton Quay area - a third of which involved pedestrians. He says the council hopes to reduce the number and severity of accidents.

Mr Shaw says the lower speed is more appropriate for the area and better reflects the speed many drivers already travel at.

The council says the lower speed limit applies for 1.3km - from Lower Willis St to the Lambton interchange & bus terminal adjacent to the Central Railway Station; and Mercer St and Bunny St.
